(Bridgeport, Conn. – May 7, 2013) – The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signing of pitcher Winston Abreu. Abreu comes to Bridgeport after appearing in 11 contests in the Mexican League this season with Ciudad del Carmen and Veracruz.

Winston joins the Bluefish during his 18th season of professional baseball. Last year, the righthander was a member of Mexico City of the Mexican League. In 45 appearances, Abreu posted a 3.83 ERA and a 4-1 record in 44.2 IP. He also saved 15 games and struck out 38 batters. The 36-year-old former Major Leaguer was originally signed as an amateur free agent in 1993 by the Atlanta Braves. He totals 38 games in three seasons in the big leagues with Baltimore, Washington, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. Winston last pitched in the United States in 2011 with Triple-A Las Vegas with the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He logged 66.1 innings of work out of the bullpen, going 8-5 with a 3.66 ERA. Abreu holds a 68-53 record with a 3.46 ERA, 82 saves and 1,261 strikeouts over the course of 557 career minor league appearances.
