(Bridgeport, Conn. – July 18, 2014) – The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signing of outfielder Casper Wells. Wells joins the Bluefish for his Atlantic League debut during his ninth season of professional baseball.
“Casper is a very talented player that adds even more experience to our veteran ballclub,” says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. “He will be an important addition as we make our second half playoff push.”
The outfielder started this season with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs of the Pacific Coast League. He appeared in 26 games, recording a .290 on-base percentage with 12 hits, two doubles and six runs scored.
The 29-year-old has played four seasons at the Major League level as a member of the Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies. Wells had his best big league season as a rookie in 2010 with the Tigers compiling a .323 batting average with six doubles, one triple, four home runs and 17 RBI in 36 games. In 277 career MLB games, he has recorded a .230 batting average with a .399 slugging percentage, 31 doubles, four triples, 25 home runs and 81 RBI.
In 2013, the Michigan native played the entire season in the Major Leagues appearing with the Athletics, White Sox and Phillies. In a combined 53 games he had 12 hits, two doubles, one RBI and six runs scored. The outfielder had his best minor league season in 2008 when he played for both Single-A West Michigan and Double-A Erie. In 125 combined games, the outfielder compiled a .269 batting average with 25 doubles, six triples, 27 home runs, 79 RBI and 25 stolen bases. In 529 career minor league games, Wells owns a .250 batting average with 113 doubles, 36 triples, 83 home runs, 271 RBI, 320 runs scored and 58 stolen bases.
Casper was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 14th round of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft out of Towson University.
