Skeeters Win Second Straight Over 'Fish

Cuevas Extends On-Base Streak

(Sugar Land, TX– September 13, 2017) – The Sugar Land Skeeters (35-31, 65-71) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (33-33, 74-62) 5-2 at Constellation Field on Wednesday night and have now taken the first two games of the three-game midweek series. The Bluefish fall to 3-2 on their six-game road trip and will play their final regular season game away from The Ballpark at Harbor Yard tomorrow evening.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Rainy Lara (9-11) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits (one home run) in six innings of work, walking three and striking out a season-high nine batters. The right-hander tallied his team-leading 12th quality start in 25 appearances on the mound in 2017.  Sugar Land starting pitcher Brett Marshall (10-7) picked up the win, giving up just two runs on seven hits across seven innings on the mound, walking one while striking out five and tossing a wild pitch. Mark Haynes retired the side in order in the top half of the ninth inning for his 13th save overall, tops on the ballclub.

Trailing 2-0, Bridgeport cut the deficit in half in the top half of the fourth inning when Andrew Lambo plated Jose Cuevas with a run-scoring base knock after Cuevas singled to open up the frame, extending his on-base streak to eight consecutive games. The ‘Fish tied the game at two in the top of the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of 2017 Liberty Division All-Star Luis Hernandez that scored Joe Poletsky who began the rally with a leadoff single. The Skeeters regained the lead at 3-2 in the home half of the sixth on a sacrifice fly produced by Albert Cordero. The home team added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-2 cushion on the second sacrifice fly in as many plate appearances from Cordero and an RBI base knock by former Bluefish Josh Prince. The Sugar Land bullpen did the rest, as the duo of Julio DePaula and Haynes combined to record the final six outs of the contest to give the Skeeters their fourth straight win.
