(Bridgeport, CT – Apr. 14, 2009) – The Atlantic League’s premier rivalry is a 10-year feud between the Bridgeport Bluefish and the Long Island Ducks. This season, the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company is recognizing the rivalry, and the important role the Bridgeport-Port Jeff Ferry plays in it, by introducing the Ferry Cup, awarded to the winner of the season series between the two clubs.
Despite playing in different states, the Bluefish and Ducks are separated by just a 14-mile expanse of the Long Island Sound between Bridgeport and Port Jefferson. Rather than taking the long way around and going through the New York metropolitan area, the teams take the one-hour ferry ride across the Sound when visiting the other’s ballpark. This unique method of travel, as well as the near-annual battles between the two teams for division supremacy, has made the cross-Sound rivalry the fiercest and most hard-fought in the league.
Beginning this season, a trophy will be awarded to the team that wins the season series against the other, courtesy of the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company. The rivalry is one of the most hotly contested in the league, with the Bluefish owning an all-time advantage of 85-83. Long Island has won the season series four times compared with three for Bridgeport, while twice the series has ended in a tie.
The archrivals will renew their feud for the first time this season on May 8 when the Ducks take the ferry to Harbor Yard. The Bluefish will make their first appearance at Citibank Park on July 2 for a Fourth of July Weekend showdown. Make sure to clear your schedule each time Long Island visits the Park City this season so you can make it to the ballpark and cheer on the Bluefish as they prepare for the “Duck Hunt,” and bring the inaugural Ferry Cup home to Bridgeport.
The Bridgeport Bluefish Professional Baseball Club, a charter team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, plays its home games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, located off Exit 27 of I-95 on the corner of Broad Street and South Frontage Road in Bridgeport. 2009 season tickets, mini-plans, group outings and individual tickets are available by calling 203-345-4800.
