Righthander throws two-hit shutout against Pats
(Bridgeport, CT – August 22, 2009) – With the Bridgeport Bluefish in the midst of a playoff hunt, the team needed a big start from Dan Reichert on Saturday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The former first round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals responded by shutting down the Patriots for the fourth time this season as Bridgeport cruised past Somerset 4-0 for their second straight victory.
Reichert (11-8) churned out his best performance of the season by pitching a complete game shutout for the second time this year. The righthander was nearly unhittable as he held the Patriots to just two hits and three walks to earn his first victory since July 24. The Atlantic League strikeout leader did not have to rely upon his fastball as he was able to induce 10 groundouts and three strikeouts. Reichert entered the game with a 3-0 record and a 2.85 ERA in four starts against the Patriots. He has now held the Pats to eight earned runs in five starts.
Bridgeport could not get much support for Reichert through the first five innings as Somerset starter Jason Standridge looked sharp against the Bluefish bats. Bridgeport put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Standridge issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to Luis Lopez and Jesse Hoorelbeke, scoring Todd Davison and Tim Johnson, to give the Bluefish a 2-0 lead.
Standridge (2-3) exited the game with two outs in the fifth inning after Bridgeport tacked on another two runs. Brandon Sing connected for a home run to leftfield for the second straight game when he drilled a 1-2, one-out pitch from Standridge for his 19th home run of the season. Luis Rodriguez then recorded an RBI single to right field, scoring Ryan Radmanovich, who hit a ground rule double to left field. Standridge was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks in five and two-third innings.
Rodriguez finished the evening 2-for-4 with an RBI and Radmanovich joined him with a 2-for-4 performance and a run scored.
Jared Gothreaux was stellar for Somerset out of the bullpen, as he held the Bluefish to one hit over the final two and one-third innings. Out of his 24 total pitches, Gothreaux tossed 23 for strikes.
Jeff Nettles and Mike Rodriguez picked up the lone hits for Somerset and Anthony Granato stole his 31st base of the season.
