Slugger has contract purchased
(Bridgeport, Conn. – July 20, 2010) – Bridgeport Bluefish team officials today announced that infielder Wily Mo Pena has had his contract purchased by the San Diego Padres organization. The former Major Leaguer will report to Triple-A Portland of the Pacific Coast League.
“We are glad to see Wily make this important stride in his effort to get back to the big leagues,” says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. “He was a key piece to this club and we hope he succeeds at the next level.”
Pena appeared in 39 games for the Bluefish in 2010, posting a .310 batting average with eight home runs and 34 RBI in 155 at-bats. Last year, the slugger played for the Buffalo Bisons (AAA) of the New York Mets organization. In 41 games with Buffalo he recorded a batting average of .276 with 40 hits, five home runs, and 21 RBI.
The 28-year-old made his Major League debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2002 after four impressive seasons in the minors. His best season in the big leagues was in 2004 with the Reds, where in 84 games, he batted .259 with 26 home runs and 66 RBI in 276 at-bats. In 2006 he became a member of the Boston Red Sox after being traded for Bronson Arroyo and from 2007 - 2008 he played in 101 games for the Washington Nationals. During seven seasons in the Majors, Pena has accumulated an overall batting average of .253 with 77 home runs and 225 RBI.
