Bluefish Earn Split Against Crabs

Mannix Steps Up For ‘Fish

(Waldorf, MD – July 29, 2010) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (11-9, 47-43) earned a four-to-one victory against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (14-7, 55-36) on Thursday night in a rain shortened contest. Bridgeport salvages a split of the road series against the team with the best record in the Atlantic League.

Kevin Mannix (9-5) served six-and-a-third strong innings and only allowed one run. The righthander tied a season high by fanning eight Blue Crabs batters. Mannix also gave up four hits and two walks. Chris Rivera replaced Mannix and tossed two-thirds of an inning of shutout ball. Antonio Alfonseca stymied the Blue Crabs attack in the eighth inning. During the ninth, a runner was at first base with nobody out, against Jorge Julio, before the rains came.

Joe Newby (3-3) lasted six innings and surrendered two earned runs on four hits and two passes. The righthanded starter struck out three in his start. Jeff Ridgway hurled a shutout seventh and allowed a walk. The Bluefish produced a run against Steve Palazzolo in the eighth and Jason Waddell in the ninth. Bridgeport bats collected four hits and a walk against the duo.

Southern Maryland struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Shaun Cumberland knocked his sixth homer of the season to lead off. The shot to leftcenter gave the Blue Crabs a one-to-nothing lead.

Bridgeport responded with a run in the third and another in the fourth. Tom Pennino singled to rightcenter and Brandon Chaves walked to establish runners at first and second. After two Bluefish batters struck out, Steve Moss singled to load the bags and Josh Phelps walked to push Pennino across.

In the fourth, Hiram Bocachica smacked his fourth homer of the season. The blast to leftcenter provided Bridgeport with it’s first lead of the game at two-to-one.

The Bluefish added an insurance run in the top of the eighth. Adam Greenberg ignited the rally with a triple. After an out had been recorded, Josh Phelps sent an opposite field single to rightfield to drive in Greenberg and give Bridgeport a two-run advantage.

Bridgeport provided one more insurance run in the ninth. With one out, Pennino singled to right and advanced to second on a bobble. Pennino scooted to third on a passed ball. Chaves followed with an infield single that kept Pennino at third; however, the catcher scored on the next official play on a grounder to second by Tike Redman.
