Lewis and Mesa signed to minor league contracts
(Bridgeport, Conn. – Dec. 1, 2012) – Former Bridgeport Bluefish pitchers Rommie Lewis and Wanel Mesa have been signed to minor league contracts this offseason. Lewis inked with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Mesa was signed by the New York Mets.

Lewis made his Atlantic League debut with the Bluefish in 2012. In 48 appearances, the reliever recorded seven saves with a 2.01 ERA and 47 strikeouts over the course of 53.2 innings of work and earned First Team Atlantic League honors. The 29-year-old made his first appearance in ‘The Show’ with the Blue Jays in 2010, logging 18.2 innings pitched. He has appeared in 20 career Major League games, striking out 20 batters in 23.2 innings of work. Lewis was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth round of the 2001 amateur draft. He spent seven seasons in the Orioles organization before being signed by Toronto in 2009 and reporting to Double-A New Hampshire of the Eastern League. In 364 career minor league appearances, the hurler owns a 4.17 ERA with 42 saves and 564 strikeouts in 673.1 innings pitched.
Mesa appeared in three games for Bridgeport last season, striking out seven batters over six and two-thirds innings pitched. The righthander entered professional baseball in 2006 as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Nationals. Over the course of five years he has made it as high as Single-A with Hagerstown in 2010. His best season came in 2009 in rookie ball with Washington. In 26.1 innings pitched, Mesa struck out 31 batters, posted a 2.73 ERA and finished with a 4-2 record. 2011 marked his first season in the Independent ranks. Mesa appeared in a total of 10 games (one start) with Rio Grande Valley and McAllen in the North American League.
