Mitchell Victorious In Opener, Walk-Off Loss In Nightcap
(York, PA – June 28, 2015) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (23-39) split a Sunday doubleheader with the York Revolution (22-41), winning game one 5-3 and losing the finale 4-3 in ten innings to close out their three game weekend series at Santander Stadium in York, Pennsylvania. Bridgeport now returns home for an eight game homestand to close out the first half of the regular season.
In the opening game, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher D.J. Mitchell (4-4) picked up the win, tossing five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs (two earned runs) on nine hits, walking two, striking out four, throwing one wild pitch and hitting a batter. York Starting Pitcher Rommie Lewis (4-6) suffered the loss, going five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on ten hits, walking three and striking out none. Patrick Mincey retired all three batters he faced in the ninth inning for his team-leading seventh save.
Bridgeport struck early in the top of the first inning off Lewis. Welington Dotel’s run-scoring single plated James Simmons with the game’s first run. John Alonso followed right behind with a sacrifice fly, scoring Josh Prince to make it 2-0 in favor of the ‘Fish. The Bluefish added a run in the second on an RBI groundout by Dotel, bringing home Luis Alberto Rodriguez. Bridgeport sent Lewis to the locker room for an early shower after scoring two more runs in the third inning on back to back RBI doubles by Andres Rodriguez and Luis Antonio Rodriguez, and the 5-0 lead was more than enough for Mitchell and company en route to the victory. Dotel led the charge offensively for Bridgeport with three hits.
In game two, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Scot Maine picked up a no-decision after pitching four and one-third innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out three and not walking a batter. York Starting Pitcher Shawn Hill also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, tossing four innings, surrendering two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out two.
Bridgeport cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning off Hill with a two-out rally. Matt Burns drove home Jobduan Morales with a single to give the ‘Fish the 1-0 edge. James Simmons would double the lead with an RBI single of his own, scoring Andres Rodriguez. York put up a picket fence on the scoreboard with single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings off Maine to take a 3-2 lead. The Bluefish would answer right back in the top of the sixth on a solo blast by John Alonso off Revolution reliever Stephen Penney with one out. Alonso “touched them all” for the fifth time this season, leading the team. Zeroes were put up on both sides until the bottom half of the tenth inning, when Andres Perez would send the Revolution fans home happy with a two-out, game winning single off reliever and losing pitcher Nick Hill (0-1) scoring Shannon Wilkerson, as York gained a split of the twin bill, handing the Bluefish their sixth walk-off loss of the season. In his Bridgeport debut, Hill pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on one hit, walking two and striking out one. Frank Gailey earned the victory in relief after pitching two scoreless innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out one. Alonso had three hits to guide the offensive attack for Bridgeport.
