Bluefish Victory A Milestone For The Skipper

Carson Remains Unbeaten, Van Asselberg Wins Career Game Number 500

(Sugar Land, TX– August 17, 2015) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (21-16, 47-60) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (14-23, 50-57) 7-3 in the opener of a seven-game series at Constellation Field on Monday night. The Bluefish collected 13 hits in the victory, marking the 40th time this season in which they have registered ten or more hits in a single game. The win was also the 500th in the managerial career of Bridgeport skipper Ricky Van Asselberg.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson (5-0) picked up the win, going eight strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits, walking one, and striking out seven. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Kelvin Villa (0-1) was tagged with the loss, tossing five innings, surrendering four runs (three earned runs), on six hits, walking one, striking out three, and hitting one batter.

The Bluefish took the early 1-0 lead off Villa in the top half of the first inning on a two-out, run-scoring single by Wilson Batista, plating Josh Prince with the game’s first run after he was hit by a pitch and stole a base earlier in the frame, one of three bags swiped on the night for Prince, while Batista extended his hitting streak to six consecutive games. The ‘Fish made it 2-0 in their half of the second on an RBI single by Ethan Chapman, again coming with two outs, bringing home Andres Rodriguez who also reached with a base knock of his own.

Bridgeport doubled the lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Welington Dotel drove in Bryan Sabatella with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Batista. The three-bagger for Dotel was his 11th of the season and 38th extra-base hit overall, both tops in the Atlantic League. That was more than enough for Carson, as the ‘Fish improve to 6-0 in games in which he has started in 2015, with the southpaw sporting a miniscule 0.79 ERA and 48 strikeouts in those contests. Dotel led the offensive attack for Bridgeport with three hits, giving the All-Star 137 on the campaign to lead the league as well.

The Bluefish continue their series with the Sugar Land Skeeters on Tuesday night deep in the heart of Texas. Bridgeport returns to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, August 24th when they welcome in their cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series continues. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Bluefish are showing their appreciation for Late Show host David Letterman. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a David Letterman Paper Face Fan.
