Sabatella Extends On-Base Streak
(Sugar Land, TX– August 21, 2015) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (21-20, 47-64) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (18-23, 54-57) 2-1 at Constellation Field on Friday evening on a wild pitch thrown by Bluefish reliever Steven Ames in the bottom half of the ninth inning. Bridgeport has now lost four consecutive games overall, and suffer their eighth walk-off loss of the 2015 season.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher David Anderson picked up a no-decision, lasting six innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out four while not walking a batter. Sugar Land Starting Matt Wright, making his final start as a professional, also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, tossing eight innings, giving up one run on four hits, walking one, and striking out six. Ramon Delgado (2-0) earned the win in relief retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning. Ames (1-2) suffered the loss out of the bullpen, facing three batters, surrendering one run on two hits, intentionally walking one, and throwing the critical wild pitch that proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
The Skeeters took the 1-0 lead off Anderson in the bottom half of the third inning on a run-scoring single off the bat of Amadeo Zazueta, plating Denny Almonte with the game’s first run after he led off the frame reaching on an error. The Bluefish have committed 11 errors in their last four games played overall. Bridgeport tied the game at one in the top of the fourth inning off Wright on an RBI single by Wilson Batista, scoring Ethan Chapman who had a base knock of his own and later moved into scoring position with a stolen base prior to the at-bat by Batista.
The game turned into a battle of the bullpens in the late innings as Ames was in search of sending the contest into extra frames. Jeff Dominguez greeted Ames rudely with a leadoff infield single in the home half of the ninth, and the winning run was aboard. Travis Scott followed with an opposite field base hit to right, and Dominguez hustled from first to third. Ricky Van Asselberg then intentionally walked Delwyn Young to load the bases for Chris Wallace. The ‘Fish skipper put five men on the infield and had his remaining two outfielders play extremely shallow, but it was all irrelevant as Ames bounced a wild pitch on a one and two count that could not be handled by Luis Rodriguez, and Dominguez scampered down the line from third with the winning run in walk-off fashion, sending the Skeeters fans home happy. Chapman, Batista, Josh Prince, and Jeudy Valdez each had one of the four hits for Bridgeport. Bryan Sabatella led off the game with a walk, extending his on-base streak to 14 consecutive games in a ‘Fish uniform.
The Bluefish continue their series with the Sugar Land Skeeters on Saturday night deep in the heart of Texas. Bridgeport returns to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, August 24th when they welcome in their cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series continues.
