Blue Crabs Hand Bluefish Fourth Straight Loss

Bridgeport Collects Fifth Multi Home Run Game Of The Season

(Bridgeport, CT– May 28, 2016) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (11-24) were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-22) 11-9 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard Saturday night in the second of a four game wraparound series on Memorial Day weekend. The two teams combined for 20 runs and 30 hits in the evening contest, which saw 12 different pitchers take the mound along with six home runs hit.

Bridgeport’s Jonathan Albaladejo tossed a no-decision in his seventh start of the season, lasting five innings, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits. Taylor Thompson (3-1), picked up his first loss, giving up three earned runs off three hits and striking out one in one inning of action on the mound. Daryl Thompson was not a factor in the game’s outcome for the Blue Crabs, pitching four and two-thirds innings and allowing six earned runs on eight hits, including three home runs. Brian Grening (1-1) earned the victory out of the bullpen, retiring all four batters he faced. Cody Eppley picked up his second consecutive save and sixth on the season, coming in to strike out two in one and a third innings pitched.

Anthony Giansani kicked things off offensively for the Bluefish in the bottom of the second inning, ripping a ball over the left field fence for his second homerun in as many nights, giving Bridgeport an early 1-0 lead after two. Southern Maryland responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third to make it 3-1, as D’Arby Myers and Michael Snyder both homered to left, with Snyder launching his second of the series. The Blue Crabs would expand their lead to three the following inning, as Atlantic League hits leader Steve Lombardozzi would drive Kuan- Jen Chen home in the top of the fourth to set the score at 4-1.

Bridgeport would have a breakout inning in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four times and taking a 5-4 lead. Jonathan Galvez and Luis Nunez both homered deep to left field, with Galvez hitting his second big fly in three games, and Nunez driving three runs home with his second big fly. The offensive action would continue the following inning, as the Blue Crabs would bring seven to the plate in the top of the fifth and score three more runs to regain the lead. The back and forth would continue offensively for both teams, as Galvez sent a runner home in the bottom of the fifth to keep the ‘Fish within one run after five. Southern Maryland’s scoring in the top of the sixth was limited to a single run, as Jamar Walton’s single sent Bryant Nelson home, and Zach Wilson was tagged out by Rossmel Perez just before trying to cross the plate, ending the frame. Bridgeport responded by batting around in the bottom of the inning, sending three home and taking a 9-8 lead after six innings of play. This included three doubles by the ‘Fish, all of which occurred after the Blue Crabs turned a 6-4-3 double play to put two outs on the board. Walton’s go-ahead three-run home run to right field in the top of the eighth sealed the deal for Southern Maryland, as they took an 11-9 lead en route to their second win of the series against Bridgeport. Giansanti led the offensive attack for the Bluefish, registering three hits in five at-bats. Photo provided courtesy of Dave Csordas.
