'Fish Fall In Extra Innings To Bees

Bridgeport Pitchers Strike Out Season-High 18 Batters As ‘Fish Fall In Extra Innings

(Bridgeport, CT– July 23, 2016)
– The Bridgeport Bluefish (9-7, 39-47) fell to the New Britain Bees (6-10, 42-44) 7-4 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard Saturday evening, in a contest that took 11 innings to complete. The win by the Bees sets up a rubber match to be played in the series finale in Bridgeport Sunday afternoon. The two teams have now each won eight games against each other in 2016, with the ‘Fish winning six in the Park City.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher D.J. Mitchell registered a no-decision, allowing three runs on two hits in five innings on the mound, walking four batters, striking out five, and allowing a home run. New Britain Starting Pitcher Jarret Leverett also did not factor into the final outcome of the game, giving up a single run on six hits in seven innings on the mound, striking out two and allowing one free pass. Grady Wood (3-2) earned the win for the Bees, walking two and striking out two in two innings. Brian Moran (0-4) took the loss, surrendering three runs on two hits in one inning on the mound, walking one batter and striking out two.

The Bluefish got on the board first, with Jose Cuevas advancing to first on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first inning, allowing Endy Chavez, who reached on a double, to score to give Bridgeport an early 1-0 lead. New Britain fired back in the top of the fourth, sending eight to the plate and batting in a crooked number of runs to take the lead. Craig Maddox lifted a ball over the right field fence to tie the ballgame, giving him his eighth big-fly of the season. James McOwen allowed two more to come home for the Bees later in the inning, knocking a single with the bases loaded to give New Britain a 3-1 advantage.

The Bees would add to their lead in the top of the eighth inning, as Jovan Rosa was sent home by Jon Griffin to put an insurance run on the board, putting the score at 4-1 in favor of the visitors. Bridgeport then stormed back in the home half of the eighth, batting around and knotting the game up at four. With one out, the ‘Fish put a run back on the board as Welington Dotel raced around the diamond for his third triple of the season, sending Luis Hernandez in to score. Jose Gil then plated a pair three batters later, crushing a double to the right field wall that allowed Dotel and Cuevas to come in to tie the game. After Jose Veras struck out the side in order in the top half of the ninth, Bridgeport found themselves with an opportunity to win in the bottom of the frame. Sean Gillblair was able to retire the side in five batters however, sending the game into extra innings as the winning run for Bridgeport was left at third. The deciding runs would come home in the top of the eleventh, as Jonathan Roof and Anthony Hewitt scored on a triple hit by Greg Golson. Golson would come home one batter later on a wild pitch thrown by Moran, giving the game its final score of 7-4. Chavez, Dotel, and Jonathan Galvez led the offensive efforts for the Bluefish with a pair of hits for each.
