Kubiak’s Quality Start and Giansanti’s Grand Slam Powers Bridgeport over New Britain
(Bridgeport, CT– July 24, 2016) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (10-7, 40-47) defeated the New Britain Bees (6-11, 42-45) 10-1 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard Sunday afternoon. The ‘Fish take the series to improve to 8-3-2 in their last 13 series’ played. Bridgeport also now leads the season series against the Bees 9-8, winning the final contest played between the two at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard this season to improve to 7-3 against their intra-state rival at home.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher David Kubiak (4-2) earned the win, allowing just a single run on five hits in six and one third innings on the mound, walking one batter and striking out three. The right-hander collected his second win over New Britain in 2016, picking up his third quality start on the year as well. New Britain Starting Pitcher Sean Gleason (2-5) was tagged with the loss, going the distance for the Bees for the first time this season. The right-hander surrendered a season high 10 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits in eight innings on the mound, striking out six batters and giving up a grand slam home run.
The Bluefish scored first in the contest, pulling out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Welington Dotel was the first to score for Bridgeport as was sent home by a Jonathan Galvez single. Galvez and Jose Cuevas would score two batters later, as Rossmel Perez launched a ball to the right field fence and then sprinted the bases, collecting his first triple of the season. The ‘Fish added an insurance run in the bottom for the fifth, as Jiwan James scored his first run for the club since April, reaching home on an RBI double hit by Luis Hernandez to give Bridgeport a 4-0 lead.
The Bees put a run back on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning, as Jon Griffin led off the inning with a double and was plated three batters later by Anthony Hewitt. The Bluefish answered by tacking on two runs of their own in the home half of the inning, extending their lead. Both runs came in on a fielding error by Greg Golson, after he was unable to cleanly field a ball hit to left by Dotel, giving the game a 6-1 score in favor of the ‘Fish. Anthony Giansanti finished the game on a high note for Bridgeport, as the center-fielder came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth and fired his sixth home run of the season over the left field fence, clearing the bases for the second grand-slam hit by the Bluefish in the series, giving the game its final score of 10-1. Dotel, Perez, and Angelys Nina led the offensive efforts for the Bluefish, with each putting up a pair of base knocks.
The Bluefish will now welcome the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard for a three game series beginning Monday, July 25th. First pitch is set for 7:12 P.M. It will be Police Appreciation Night at the ballpark, where police officers can show their badge and receive two tickets to the game.
