David Kubiak Wins The Opener, Helped Out By Three Hits From Welington Dotel
(Central Islip, NY– September 7, 2016) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (30-29, 60-69) split a single admission doubleheader with the Long Island Ducks (26-33, 66-63) at Bethpage Ballpark on Wednesday night with the visitors winning the opening game 3-2 and the home team taking the nightcap 2-0 with both contests lasting seven innings. The twin-bill was scheduled after the game that was supposed to be played on Tuesday night between the cross sound rivals was postponed due to rain.
In Game Number One Bridgeport Starting Pitcher David Kubiak (7-4) earned the win with six strong innings of work, allowing just two runs on six hits, striking out eight. Long Island Starting Pitcher Bobby Blevins (2-11) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on eight hits in six innings pitched, walking two and striking out one. David Carpenter fired a scoreless inning of relief to notch his fifth save of the season.
Trailing 1-0, Bridgeport took the lead for good in the top half of the fifth against Blevins. Welington Dotel drove home Luis Hernandez with the tying run lacing an RBI double to right field after Hernandez led off the frame with a walk. Jose Cuevas gave the ‘Fish the lead with a run scoring double of his own off the wall in left field, scoring Dotel. Newcomer Geraldo Valentin followed with his first hit in a Bridgeport uniform, scoring Cuevas with a RBI base knock to give the ‘Fish some much needed insurance, an run batted in that proved to be the difference as Carpenter was able to shut the door in the ninth for the one-run victory. Dotel led the way for Bridgeport with three hits.
In Game Number Two, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Matthew Spann (2-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits in five innings pitched, walking two and striking out three. Long Island Starting Pitcher Jarret Leverett (5-8) picked up the victory with five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while walking three and striking out five. Amalio Diaz closed the game out to collect his third save on the campaign.
Long Island scored both runs in the second off Spann on an RBI single by Mike Blanke and a run-scoring double by Tyler Colvin which was enough for Leverett and Diaz as Bridgeport was held off the scoreboard for the sixth time in 2016. Valentin led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of base knocks. The Bluefish return home on Tuesday, September 13th to kick off their final regular season homestand when they welcome in the Somerset Patriots to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard for a day/night doubleheader.
