Five Bridgeport Batters Register Multiple Hits In The Winning Effort
(Bridgeport, CT– May 31, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (22-18) defeated the New Britain Bees (14-25) 8-6 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday afternoon and have now taken the first two games of the three-game midweek series in the Park City. The Bluefish totaled 14 hits overall, marking the 18th time in 40 games played this season in which they have recorded ten or more hits in a single contest.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Charles Brewer registered a no-decision, allowing just one run on six hits in six innings of work, walking three and striking out a season-high seven. The right hander notches his first quality start on the 2017 campaign. New Britain Starting Pitcher Mike Lee also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, surrendering one run on seven hits in six innings pitched, striking out four. David Carpenter shut the door in the top half of the ninth inning to lock down his Atlantic League best 15th save of the season and second in as many games against New Britain.
New Britain took the early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning off Rearick on a two-out, solo home run to left field by Jovan Rosa. The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Craig Maddox. Trailing 2-0 after the fans stretched out their arms and legs, the Bluefish went to work, sending eight batters to the plate, scoring four runs on four hits to take their first lead of the day 4-2. Jonathan Galvez put the ‘Fish ahead 3-2 with a two-out, opposite field double down the right filed line off losing pitcher Nate Roe (0-2) that plated D’Arby Myers. Bridgeport was at it again in the home half of the eighth inning, sending eight to the plate for the second consecutive frame, scoring four more runs on four hits to take an 8-2 lead on run-scoring singles by Myers and Galvez and a two-run base knock off the bat of Ozney Guillen. The eight unanswered runs were all to the benefit of winning pitcher Alex Burgos (2-0). New Britain did not go down without a fight, scoring four runs of their own in the top of the ninth to get within 8-6. With the tying-run at the plate in the person of pinch-hitter Jamar Walton, Carpenter sent the largest crowd of the season at 5,018 home with smiles on their faces by getting Walton to fly out to Angelys Nina in left field as the ‘Fish were able to hang on. Myers, Galvez, Nina, Sean Burroughs and Jose Cuevas led the 14 hit attack for the Bluefish with two hits apiece.
