Pitching Highlights 'Fish Win Over Blue Crabs

Brewer Wins Seventh Game, Bullpen Dominates

(Waldorf, MD– August 1, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (14-11, 55-40) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (10-15, 48-46) 6-2 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday evening to even up the three-game series at a victory apiece. The Bluefish tallied 13 hits in the ballgame, marking the 44th time in 95 games played in which they have registered ten or more hits in a single contest.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Charles Brewer (7-4) earned the win, allowing just two runs on four hits across six innings pitched, walking one and striking out six. The right-hander notched his seventh quality start in 18 appearances on the mound as the Bluefish improving to 13-5 overall in those outings. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Brian Grening finished with a no-decision after giving up just one run on two hits in an inning and a third and seven batters faced before leaving the matchup after suffering a right forearm contusion on a line drive hit by Jonathan Galvez with two-outs in the top half of the second inning.

Southern Maryland took a 2-0 lead off Brewer in the home half of the first inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cory Vaughn and a two-out RBI base knock from L.J. Hoes. The Bluefish cut the deficit to 2-1 versus Grening in the top of the second when Daniel Fields plated Jose Gil with a run-scoring double into the right field corner on the 11th pitch of the at-bat thrown by Grening. Bridgeport tied the game at two in the top of the third against losing pitcher Sam Runion (1-2) on an RBI single by Sean Burroughs that scored 2017 Liberty Division All-Star D’Arby Myers after he laced a ground-rule double over the wall in left centerfield with one man away. The visitors took the lead for good at 4-2 in the top of the fourth on back-to-back run-scoring singles from Tony Abreu and Welington Dotel. The run support was more than enough for Brewer who settled down in the middle innings to retire 17 of the final 21 batters he faced. The ‘Fish added a pair of insurance runs on an RBI single in the eighth from Galvez and a run-scoring two base hit by 2017 Liberty Division All Star Luis Hernandez in the ninth. The bullpen trio of Vinnie Pestano, Wander Perez, and Manny Delcarmen took care of business in the final three innings, retiring all nine Blue Crabs hitters, including the first seven via the strikeout. Myers led the way for the Bluefish with three hits en route to the victory. Photo provided courtesy of Joe Doll.
