Hernandez, Cuevas, And Nina All Go Yard In Defeat
(Waldorf, MD– August 2, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (11-15, 49-46) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (14-12), 55-41) 5-4 in walk-off fashion at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday afternoon to take the rubber-game of the three-game series before the Crustacean Nation. The Bluefish suffer their third walk-off defeat of the 2017 season, with two coming at the hands of the Blue Crabs.
Bridgeport starting pitcher Ross Seaton tallied a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings pitched, walking and striking out three while tossing two wild pitches and hitting three batters. Southern Maryland starting pitcher David Russo also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, giving up just one run on four hits (one home run) across six innings of work, walking three, striking out one and hitting a batter.
Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead against Russo just two batters into the ballgame when 2017 Liberty Division All-Star Luis Hernandez lifted a solo home run to left field for the early cushion. Southern Maryland took their first advantage of the afternoon in the home half of the fifth inning when they sent eight batters to the plate versus Seaton, scoring three times to go on top 3-1, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of L.J. Hoes. The ‘Fish went back on top with three unanswered runs in the top of the eighth off reliever Zack Thornton on a solo home run by Jose Cuevas and a two-out, go ahead two-run blast from Angelys Nina, as the visitors flexed their muscles and were once again in front 4-3. Southern Maryland answered right back in the bottom of the frame touching up losing pitcher Elvin Ramirez (3-2) when Luis Alen evened the contest at four with a roundtripper coming with two men down and the bases empty. Hoes was the hero in the bottom of the ninth, plating Edwin Garcia with the winning run on a line-drive single to right centerfield, his third hit and run driven home on the day, allowing Jesse Beal (6-3) to come away with the win out of the bullpen. Cuevas, Jonathan Galvez, Angel Rosa, and 2017 Liberty Division All-Star D’Arby Myers led the way for the Bluefish with two hits each. Photo provided courtesy of Joe Doll.
