Parra Victorious In Debut, Bridgeport Blasts Four Home Runs
(Central Islip, NY– August 3, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (15-12, 56-41) defeated the Long Island Ducks (11-15, 47-49) 8-2 at Bethpage Ballpark on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series between cross- sound and Liberty Division foes. The Bluefish even up the season series at seven victories apiece, as they are in search of their first Ferry Cup crown since 2015.
Bridgeport starting pitcher Manny Parra (1-0) earned the win in his Bluefish and Atlantic League debut, allowing just two runs on five hits across five and two-thirds innings pitched, walking two and striking out seven. Long Island starting pitcher John Brownell (8-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned runs) on ten hits (two home runs) in five innings of work, striking out two.
Bridgeport took a 4-0 lead against Brownell in the top half of the fourth inning when they sent eight batters to the plate against the 2017 Liberty Division All-Star, highlighted by a two-run home run over the batter’s eye in straightaway centerfield from Daniel Fields. The visitors made it 5-0 in their favor in the top of the fifth when Jonathan Galvez launched a solo shot off Brownell for his 11th big fly of the campaign. After the Ducks cut the deficit to 5-2 in the home half of the fifth versus Parra, the ‘Fish went right back to work in the sixth when Welington Dotel cracked his first four-bagger in 2017, a two-run shot to left that also plated Tony Abreu after he led off the frame with a triple that went all the way to the wall in right centerfield as Bridgeport regained a five run advantage at 7-2. Fields finished the scoring in the top of the seventh, putting the cherry on top of a three RBI night with his second home run of the ballgame, a solo shot to the opposite field in left, concluding a performance that saw the Bluefish hit four over the wall on the night, matching a single-game season high, last taking place on July 26th as part of a 9-3 victory over the York Revolution at PEOPLEsBank Park.
