Galvez Goes Yard Once Again, Four Hits For Cuevas
(Central Islip, NY– August 4, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks (12-15, 48-49) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (15-13, 56-42) 11-10 in walk-off fashion at Bethpage Ballpark on Friday evening to even up the four-game series in the Empire State at a victory apiece in a contest that saw a combined total of five ties and lead changes and lasted three hours and forty-five minutes. The Bluefish suffer their fourth walk-off defeat of the season, and second on their current seven-game road trip, while falling to 14-10 in one-run ballgames.
Bridgeport starting pitcher Rainy Lara tallied a no-decision, surrendering eight runs on eight hits in four and one-third innings pitched, walking three while striking out six and tossing a wild pitch. Long Island starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, giving up five runs on nine hits across five innings of work, walking and striking out one.
Bridgeport took a 2-0 lead against Alvarez in the top half of the first inning on run-scoring singles produced by Jose Cuevas and Jonathan Galvez. Long Island answered back with eight unanswered runs of their own to take an 8-2 advantage after four innings of play. The Bluefish would cut the deficit to 8-5 in the top of the fifth on back-to-back RBI groundouts from Daniel Fields and Galvez and an RBI double by Tony Abreu with two men away. The visitors would regain the lead sending eight batters to the plate in the top of the sixth scoring five runs for a 10-8 edge, highlighted by a two-out, go-ahead three run home run to left field by Galvez off reliever John Lannan, giving the power-hitting right hander five runs batted in on the night. Long Island responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth when Angelo Songco drove home a pair of runs with a game-tying two-run base knock with two outs versus reliever Frank DeJiulio, Jr., and just like that the back and forth affair was knotted at ten. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Jordan Pacheco sent the faithful of the Flock home with smiles on their faces when he plated Alex Burg with a game-winning walk off single on a fastball thrown by losing pitcher Manny Delcarmen (2-2), enabling Rob Rogers (3-0) to be victorious out of the Long Island bullpen. Cuevas led the way for the Bluefish with four hits in defeat.
