'Fish Fall To Ducks In Pitcher's Duel

Galvez Extends Hitting Streak

(Central Islip, NY– August 6, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks (14-15, 50-49) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (15-15, 56-44) 2-1 at Bethpage Ballpark on Sunday evening in the finale of a four-game series in the Empire State. The Ducks take three of four games in the series after dropping the opener on Thursday night, with each of the last three contests being one-run affairs.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Charles Brewer (7-5) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on five hits across five innings on the mound, walking five and striking out four while also hitting a batter and tossing a wild pitch. Long Island starting pitcher Rafael Perez (7-7) picked up the victory firing six scoreless innings on just one hit surrendered, walking two and striking out three. Amalio Diaz recorded the final two outs of the matchup to notch his sixth save of the season and second in as many nights versus the ‘Fish.

Long Island went ahead 2-0 in the home half of the fourth inning against Brewer on a run-scoring single off the bat of Anthony Vega and a bases loaded walk issued to pinch-hitter Quintin Berry, who replaced Jordan Pacheco after he was hit by a pitch on the wrist in the bottom of the third. The pitcher’s duel at one point saw Brewer retire ten of 13 batters he faced with Perez matching the right-hander pitch for pitch recoding a stretch in which he erased 16 of the final 18 Bridgeport hitters, including the southpaw finishing up his performance inducing Jose Cuevas to bounce into a double play, the fifth twin-killing of the series executed by the Flock defensively. The ‘Fish were able to crack the scoreboard in the top half of the ninth inning when Jose Gil picked up his second base knock of the night, plating Daniel Fields after he reached on a double into the gap in right centerfield with one man away. Gil’s RBI single forced Long Island skipper Kevin Baez to call upon Diaz in search of two outs with the Ducks lead having now been cut to a single run at 2-1. Jonathan Galvez followed Gil with a clean single to centerfield, moving the tying-run into scoring position while putting the potential lead run at first as Galvez extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive games while also now having reached base safely in 16 straight contests, both season-highs. In search of some more late-inning magic, the visitors would fall just short once again as Diaz retired Tony Abreu on a fly ball to left field and retired Angel Rosa on a fielder’s choice, enabling the Ducks to come away with the victory, pulling them to within one half-game of Bridgeport and Somerset for First Place in the Second Half of the Liberty Division Standings. Gil had two hits in the losing effort for the Bluefish.
