Impressive Outing Out Of The Bullpen For Grotz
(Bridgewater, NJ– August 26, 2017) – The Somerset Patriots (22-26, 64-54) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (23-26, 64-55) 4-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening and have now taken the first two games of the three game weekend series between Liberty Division Foes. The Bluefish have been held to just one run on ten hits overall in the pair of contests played between the ballclubs thus far.
Bridgeport starting pitcher Manny Parra (2-3) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned runs) on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched, walking three and striking out seven. Somerset starting pitcher Jerome Williams registered a no-decision in the matchup, retiring all three batters faced in his only inning on the mound, striking out one. Patrick Johnson (1-1) was credited with the win in relief after tossing two scoreless innings on just one hit given up, striking out three. Dustin Antolin did not allow a run in the top half of the ninth inning en route to his first save of the season.
Somerset batted around versus Parra in the home half of the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits to take a commanding 4-0 advantage, with all four runs crossing the plate with two men out. Yovan Gonzalez got the scoring started with a two-run double off the wall in right field that plated Greg Golson after he reached with a two base hit of his own and Justin Pacchioli who drew a free pass. Carlos Guzman followed Gonzalez with an RBI base knock for the 3-0 cushion, and Olmo Rosario finished off the rally with a run-scoring single. The ‘Fish got to within 4-1 in the top of the fifth on a Gustavo Molina solo home run to left, his third roundtripper of the campaign, but the boys from the Park City would get no closer, as seven Patriots relief pitchers tossed eight innings in total, giving up one run on four hits, striking out 12, holding Bridgeport to five hits or fewer in a contest for the 14th time this year. Zac Grotz was effective out of the bullpen for the ‘Fish as he did not give up a run in two and one-third innings of work, the longest outing of 2017 for the right-hander.
