'Fish Shutout Blue Crabs In Series Opener

Roibal In Total Control Before Leaving Game Due To Injury

(Waldorf, MD– August 28, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (24-27, 65-56) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (21-30, 60-61) 3-0 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Monday evening in the opener of a four-game series in the Chesapeake State. Bridgeport’s pitching staff notches their seventh overall shutout on the 2017 campaign and their first since a 7-0 victory back on August 17th versus the Lancaster Barnstormers at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Reinier Roibal (4-2) picked up the victory firing five and two-thirds scoreless innings on just three hits allowed while striking out four before having to leave the game due to a groin injury. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Eric Fornataro (0-7) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on six hits across five innings pitched, walking five and striking out one. Manny Delcarmen closed contest out in the bottom half of the ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season.

Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead against Fornataro just three batters into the contest as Jose Cuevas drove home 2017 Liberty Division All-Star D’Arby Myers with the game’s first run by way of a run-scoring base knock after Myers gave the keynote in the matchup with a double into the left field corner, his 19th two-base hit overall. The ‘Fish added an insurance run in the top of the second for a 2-0 advantage when 2017 Liberty Division All-Star Luis Hernandez plated Andrew Lambo with an RBI infield single after Lambo began the frame with a base hit of his own. The visitors would give the game its final score of 3-0 in the top of the sixth as Ozney Guillen crossed the plate by way of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Myers with Guillen beginning the rally with an opposite-field double that went just fair over the third base bag and found its way into the left field corner. The rest of the night belonged to the Bridgeport pitching staff, as the quartet of Roibal, Vinnie Pestano, Zac Grotz and Delcarmen limited the potent Southern Maryland offense to just six hits en route to the victory. Hernandez led the way for the Bluefish with three hits, his 27th multi-hit game of the season and fourth of the three-hit variety. Photo provided by Bert Hindman of Memories Photography.
