Brewer And Seaton Both Go The Distance In Losing Efforts
(Waldorf, MD– August 30, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (23-30, 62-61) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (24-29, 65-58) in both games of a single admission doubleheader at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday night, taking each contest by the same score of 4-1, with the two matchups lasting seven innings of play.
In Game One, Bridgeport starting pitcher Charles Brewer (8-6) suffered the complete game loss, allowing four runs (three earned runs) on eight hits (one home run) across six innings pitched, walking four and striking out three. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Gaby Hernandez (11-3) picked up the win giving up just one run on four hits (one home run) in six innings of work, walking two and striking out six. Cody Eppley shut the door in the top half of the seventh inning for his team-leading 29th save of the season.
Trailing 1-0 in the top half of the fifth, Bridgeport tied the game at one against Hernandez on a leadoff solo home run by Gustavo Molina over the Grille Number 13 Mini Monster in left field, his fourth roundtriper of the campaign. Southern Maryland took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame versus Brewer as Cory Vaughn went yard against the right-hander launching a three-run shot to left centerfield giving the game its final score of 4-1. Molina led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits overall.
In Game Two, Bridgeport starting pitcher Ross Seaton (1-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned runs) on six hits (one home run) in six innings on the mound, walking three while striking out five and tossing a wild pitch en route to his first complete game of the campaign. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Brian Grening (8-6) earned the victory in the nightcap with five solid innings pitched and one run given up on four hits, striking out five. Zack Thornton struck out the side in the top of the seventh for his first save of the year.
Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead against Grening just three batters into the second game when Jonathan Galvez plated 2017 Liberty Division All-Star Luis Hernandez with a run-scoring base knock after Hernandez doubled to the opposite-field in left for his 20th two-base hit of the season. Galvez has now driven home 70 runs, tops on the Bluefish roster. The Blue Crabs went ahead 3-1 in the home half of the fourth on a three-run blast to left by L.J. Hoes off Seaton, and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to come away with a pair of victories over the ‘Fish in the twin-bill, dropping Bridgeport to 1-5 on their current seven-game road trip.
