'Fish Split Series As Bats Come Alive

Nina And Rosa Both Go Yard On Big Offensive Night

(Waldorf, MD– August 31, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (25-29, 66-58) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (23-31, 62-62) 9-8 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday evening to earn a split of the four game series versus the 2017 First Half Freedom Division Champions. The Bluefish now return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday night to open up a seven-game homestand when they welcome in the York Revolution in the opener of a four-game Labor Day weekend set.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Manny Parra registered a no-decision in the contest, allowing five runs on eight hits in four innings pitched, walking two while striking out three and tossing a pair of wild pitches and hitting a batter. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Daryl Thompson also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, surrendering three runs on five hits (two home runs) in five innings of work, walking three and striking out five.

Trailing 2-0 in the top half of the fifth inning, the Bluefish took their first lead of the night against Thompson at 3-2 on a game-tying two-run home run to straightaway centerfield off the bat of Angelys Nina and a go-ahead solo blast from Angel Rosa over the Grille Number 13 Mini Monster in left. After the Blue Crabs scored five runs in the home half of the frame to jump back ahead 7-3, Bridgeport went to work versus the Southern Maryland bullpen. In the top of the sixth, the ‘Fish got to within 7-6 as the dynamic duo of Nina and Rosa were at it once again with Nina plating Daniel Fields with a run-scoring base knock and Rosa driving home Gustavo Molina and Ozney Guillen with a two-run double to the opposite-field in right. The visitors went ahead for good in the top of the eighth scoring three runs all coming with two outs and the bases empty off losing pitcher Zack Thornton (2-4), highlighted by RBI singles from 2017 Liberty Division All Star Luis Hernandez, Welington Dotel, and Jonathan Galvez, and in the blink of an eye the Bluefish led 9-7. The beneficiary of the rally was winning pitcher Vinnie Pestano (1-1), who fired a clean inning of relief. Manny Delcarmen shut the door in the bottom of the ninth for his sixth save of the season and second in the series as Bridgeport was able to hang on for the one-run victory and conclude their seven-game road trip and the month of August on a very positive note, tallying their 23rd come from behind win of 2017 and seventh such when trailing by three runs or more in a single contest. Rosa led the offensive attack with a season-best four hits overall as the Bluefish collected 14 total hits in the ballgame, marking the 68th time this season in 124 games played in which they have had ten or more hits in a matchup.
