Patriots Complete Sweep Of Bluefish

Another Multi-Hit Game For Myers

(Bridgewater, NJ– August 27, 2017) – The Somerset Patriots (23-26, 65-54) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (23-27, 64-56) 5-2 at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday night to complete a three-game weekend series sweep in the Garden State. Bridgeport will now continue their seven-game road trip on Monday evening when they open up a four-game series against the 2017 First Half Freedom Division Champion Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Rainy Lara (9-8) was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs (one earned run) on eight hits (one home run) in five innings on the mound, walking three while striking out two and hitting one batter. Somerset starting pitcher Efrain Nieves (3-4) registered the win, allowing just one run on six hits in five innings pitched, walking and striking out three while also hitting a batter.

Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead against Nieves in the top half of the third inning when Welington Dotel plated 2017 Liberty Division All-Star D’Arby Myers with an RBI base knock after Myers reached on an infield single with one man away. The ‘Fish were looking for some insurance with the bases loaded, but 2017 Liberty Division All-Star Luis Hernandez was denied a hit through the originator when Nieves snagged a line drive hit right back to the southpaw on the pitcher’s mound to end the frame. Somerset took the lead in the home half of the third and never relinquished the advantage when they batted around versus Lara, scoring four times on three hits for a 4-1 cushion, with all four runs coming on one big swing of the bat as Kyle Roller rocketed a grand slam home run over the right field wall to put the Patriots ahead for good, his team-leading 19th big fly of the season and first of the grand slam variety. Roller drove home his fifth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder’s choice, putting Somerset ahead 5-1. Bridgeport cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the ninth on a run-scoring double by Dotel that enabled Angel Rosa to score all the way from first base after he singled to begin the rally, but that was as close as the visitors would get as they were held to just three runs scored in total for the entire series. Myers and Dotel each had two of the ten hits overall for the Bluefish in the ballgame as they recorded ten or more hits in a single contest for the 67th time in 120 games played this season, while Myers tallied his team-best 36th multi-hit game overall.

Bridgeport returns the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, September 1st when they welcome in the York Revolution for a four-game Labor Day Weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M.
